Automobile racing is one of the world's most popular sports. Automobile racing emerged almost immediately after the invention of the first car. The first known automobile race was in France in 1895, from Paris to Bordeaux, in which driver Émile Levassor crossed the finish line first. Unfortunately he was ultimately disqualified because his car did not have the required four seats. In the United States, the first automobile race was held in Chicago, Ill. on November 2, 1895, in which driver Frank Duryea won a 54.36 mile race in 10 hours, 23 minutes. Since then, automobile racing has exploded in popularity world-wide. It now includes a variety of types of races, including stock car, single-seater, drag, touring car, sports car, off-road, kart, and legend-car racing.
